More about Pigmentation, Sun Spots, and Melasma

What is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation is a common skin condition, where areas of the face or body have more melanin than normal.

It can appear as darker patches on certain parts of the skin and may be a result of genetics, sun exposure, hormones or medications.

Pigmentation affects many people around the world and while it doesn't usually pose any long-term health risks, some types such as melasma can cause anxiety for those affected due to its cosmetic impact.

What are sun spots (also referred to as age spots):

Sun spots or age spots are a form of hyperpigmentation that can appear on the skin as a result of long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from either natural or artificial sources.

Sunspots often occur in areas frequently exposed to the sun and look like small, darkened patches on the face, back, chest and other parts of the body.

Some individuals may have only one area affected by sunspot whereas some might see multiple regions with darkened pigments due to various levels of UV exposure.

Prevention is key when it comes to avoiding sunspots, therefore sunscreen should be applied regularly even if they don't visibly present themselves yet – prevention is better than being sorry!

What is Melasma?

Melasma is a skin condition characterised by grey or brown patches appearing on the face.

These patches are caused mainly by an increased production of melanin in the skin, which usually occurs due to exposure to sunlight as well as hormones and genetics.

Melasma can affect both men and women though it's more common among women who are pregnant or taking birth control pills.

What is the main cause of Pigmentation, Sun Spots, and Melasma?

Pigmentation, sun spots, and melasma are common skin conditions caused by excessive production of melanin. Melanin is a natural process in the body; however, when its levels increase abnormally it can cause these pigmentation disorders.

The most prominent factor that contributes to this imbalance is overexposure to sunlight and other forms of ultraviolet radiation which causes damage to skin cells.

Other factors such as hormonal imbalances or certain medications may also trigger an abnormal amount of pigment production leading to age spots, patchy discolouration (lentigines), freckles and even darkening around the neck area due to friction from clothing (accentuated Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra).

To avoid developing further pigmentation issues proper protection needs to be taken while outdoors and avoiding any triggering factors should help maintain normal amounts of melanin for healthy looking skin over time.
