The Commuter Glow-Up

## Polynucleotides (Salmon DNA) and under-eye treatments

The eye area is often where people notice it first. Fine lines can become more noticeable, skin can appear less hydrated, and dark circles, crepey skin or under-eye hollows can create a tired appearance even when you don't necessarily feel tired.

At Dr Charlesworth Clinic in Sevenoaks, I increasingly see patients who aren't looking to dramatically change their appearance. They simply want to look fresher and a little less tired.

**Why do our eyes start to look tired?**

The skin around our eyes is particularly delicate, which means changes in skin quality can be more noticeable here. But the appearance of tired eyes isn't simply a skin issue.

As we age, changes also occur to the underlying bone structure of the face. The bony eye socket gradually changes and becomes larger, while changes to the surrounding soft tissues and facial volume can alter the support around the eye. Together, these changes can contribute to hollowing, shadows and a more tired appearance.

Skin quality changes at the same time. Our skin is continually exposed to what researchers call the exposome – the combined impact of factors including UV exposure, pollution, stress, sleep and lifestyle.

For those regularly travelling into London, pollution is another consideration. Research has associated exposure to air pollution with oxidative stress and extrinsic skin ageing. That doesn't mean commuting is suddenly going to age your face, but it is another reason to think about skin health as something influenced by our anatomy, age, environment and lifestyle rather than looking at one line or dark circle in isolation.

This is why consultation is so important. Before recommending treatment, I assess the underlying facial structure, volume, skin thickness and quality, pigmentation and the anatomy of the under-eye area to understand what is actually creating the concern.

**Improving thin or crepey skin around the eyes**

If skin quality is the main issue, there are now several ways we can stimulate and support the skin rather than simply adding volume.

Polynucleotides – sometimes referred to by patients as Salmon DNA – are one option. These are biostimulatory injectables used with the aim of supporting skin quality and regeneration. For suitable patients, they may be considered for concerns such as fine lines, crepey skin, hydration and overall skin quality around the eyes.

However, I don't necessarily use one product in isolation.

Depending on the patient's skin, I can create a bespoke combination treatment incorporating skin boosters, polynucleotides, biostimulatory ingredients, amino acids and vitamins. Calcium-based biostimulatory injectables, such as Radiesse, may also form part of an appropriate treatment plan.

Where clinically appropriate, treatments can sometimes be combined within the same appointment. This allows us to address different aspects of skin quality while keeping the treatment plan practical and minimising the number of separate appointments and periods of downtime.

The objective isn't to make the eye area look ‘done’. It is to improve the quality and support of your own skin while maintaining a natural appearance.

**What are the benefits of Polynucleotides (Salmon DNA) around the eyes?**

For suitable patients, the aim of using Polynucleotides around the eyes is to support the quality of the delicate skin rather than dramatically changing the shape or volume of the area.

They may be considered where concerns include fine lines, dehydration, loss of skin quality or thin, crepey-looking skin beneath the eyes.

However, Polynucleotides aren't a universal solution for every under-eye concern. If the tired appearance is being caused predominantly by structural volume loss, pigmentation or another anatomical factor, a different treatment – or combination of treatments – may be more appropriate.

**Can Polynucleotides help dark circles?**

Dark circles aren't all caused by the same thing.

For some patients, the quality and thinness of the skin can contribute to the appearance of darkness beneath the eyes. For others, pigmentation, visible blood vessels, volume loss or shadows created by the natural anatomy of the eye area may be more important.

Where skin quality is contributing to the concern, Polynucleotides, skin boosters or another regenerative treatment may form part of the plan. Where something else is responsible for the darkness, treating the skin alone may not provide the result we're looking for.

For patients looking for dark circles treatment in Sevenoaks, the first step is therefore understanding why the area looks dark before deciding how – or whether – to treat it.

**What about crepey skin and collagen loss?**

Where thin, crepey skin and collagen loss are more significant, injectable treatments aren't the only option.

Specialist fractional laser treatment can be used to stimulate collagen and improve skin quality. For suitable patients, this may be used alone or as part of a broader treatment plan alongside regenerative or biostimulatory injectables.

Another option is microneedling or radiofrequency microneedling, which can be combined with exosomes as a skin-regenerative approach. These treatments can be useful for patients looking for an alternative to injectable-based treatment and can be planned around the individual's tolerance for downtime.

The important point is that we're not choosing a treatment because it happens to be popular. We're selecting the technology or combination that addresses what is actually happening in your skin.

**What if the problem is actually under-eye hollowing?**

“Tired eyes” aren't one single problem.

One person might have fine, dehydrated or crepey skin. Another may have pigmentation or dark circles. Someone else may have loss of structural support and volume beneath the eyes, creating a hollow or shadow.

Where genuine volume loss is contributing to the appearance, specialist tear-trough filler may be appropriate.

This is an area where careful patient selection and technique are particularly important. The aim isn't simply to fill every hollow. Using an appropriate specialist filler and the right amount of product is important to avoid an overfilled or puffy appearance and to respect the natural anatomy and tear drainage around the eye.

For the right patient, carefully placed filler can restore subtle volume and soften shadowing, creating a fresher appearance without making the eye area look heavy.

For other patients, however, adding filler isn't the answer at all.

**Polynucleotides, biostimulation or tear-trough filler: which is right for me?**

These treatments do different jobs.

If the principal concern is thin, crepey or poor-quality skin, the treatment plan may focus on regeneration and collagen stimulation using options such as Polynucleotides, bespoke skin boosters, amino acids and vitamins, calcium-based biostimulation, fractional laser, microneedling or radiofrequency microneedling.

If structural volume loss or hollowing is creating the tired appearance, specialist tear-trough filler may be considered where the anatomy is suitable.

And quite often, the answer isn't one treatment or the other. A carefully planned combination can address both skin quality and the underlying structural changes that occur with ageing.

That's why the consultation comes first. I want to understand your facial anatomy, skin quality and what is actually creating the concern before deciding what – if anything – we should treat.

**How much do Polynucleotides for under eyes cost?**

The cost of Polynucleotide treatment for the under-eye area will depend on the individual treatment plan recommended following consultation.

Some patients may benefit from Polynucleotides alone, while for others I may recommend a bespoke combination treatment or an alternative approach.

Current treatment costs can be found on the Dr Charlesworth Clinic price list, and we'll discuss the anticipated cost with you before proceeding with treatment.

**Can you fit under-eye treatment around a London working week?**

For my Sevenoaks patients who commute into London, practicality matters.

You don't necessarily want an aesthetic appointment that requires taking several days away from work or explaining to everyone in the office what you've had done.

One advantage of creating an individual treatment plan is that, where appropriate, complementary treatments can sometimes be performed in the same appointment. This can reduce the number of separate clinic visits and help minimise overall disruption.

There are also options such as microneedling and radiofrequency microneedling with exosomes for patients particularly concerned about downtime.

That said, I don't describe aesthetic procedures as universally having zero downtime. Redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising can occur depending on the treatment and the individual.

If you have an important meeting, presentation, wedding or event coming up, tell me at your consultation. We can discuss treatment timing and what you should realistically expect.

**The aim isn't to look different**

I think this is particularly important for professional patients. Most people who come to see me don't walk through the door asking to look ten years younger. They say things like:

“I look tired all the time.”

“My eyes don't look like me anymore.”

Or:

“I just want to look a bit fresher.”

That's a very different objective from changing someone's face.

My approach to aesthetics has always been conservative. I want people to notice that you look well – not immediately identify what treatment you've had.

**From the City back to Sevenoaks**

There is also something rather convenient about having treatment close to home.

Instead of adding another appointment to an already busy London day, patients can have their consultation and treatment here in Sevenoaks at Dr Charlesworth Clinic at St Julians.

Whether your concern is tired-looking eyes, fine lines, crepey skin, dark circles, loss of skin quality or under-eye hollowing, the first step is establishing what's actually causing the appearance you're seeing.

From there, we can create an individual treatment plan, this might include Polynucleotides (Salmon DNA), bespoke skin boosters, amino acids and vitamins, calcium-based biostimulation, specialist fractional laser, microneedling or radiofrequency microneedling with exosomes, or carefully selected tear-trough filler where volume loss is contributing to the concern.

Sometimes a combination is appropriate, but sometimes a single treatment is all that's required. And sometimes my advice will be that you don't need treatment at all.

Because the best commuter glow-up shouldn't make you look like you've had something done, it should just look like you've finally had a very good night's sleep.
